Hand Hygiene Matters: Mastering Proper Handwashing Techniques

Handwashing is one of the simplest—and most effective—ways to prevent the spread of illness in any environment, from schools and offices to healthcare facilities and manufacturing plants. At RMS, we believe that promoting proper hygiene is key to maintaining a safe and healthy facility. Here’s a quick refresher on the right way to wash your hands—and why it matters.

Why Handwashing Is Important

Germs are easily transferred from surfaces to your hands and then to your eyes, nose, or mouth, where they can enter your body. Regular and proper handwashing reduces the spread of common viruses, bacteria, and even foodborne illnesses.

When Should You Wash Your Hands?

According to CDC guidelines, you should wash your hands:

  • Before eating or preparing food
  • After using the restroom
  • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
  • After handling garbage or touching high-contact surfaces
  • After caring for someone who is sick

The Right Way to Wash Your Hands

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold).
  2. Apply soap and lather well.
  3. Scrub all surfaces—palms, backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails—for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse thoroughly under running water.
  5. Dry hands using a clean towel or air dryer.

Pro Tip: Teach staff to sing “Happy Birthday” twice to hit the 20-second mark.

Don’t Forget Hand Sanitizer

If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Rub all surfaces of your hands together until they feel dry—about 20 seconds.

Betco GeneSys 20 Demonstration @ RMS

In a recent demonstration at Riley Maintenance Systems (RMS), Josh Enfield performed a demo to showcase the Betco GeneSys 20 automatic scrubber. This compact yet powerful machine is designed to tackle the toughest cleaning tasks with ease. 

The GeneSys 20 boasts a 20-inch scrub path and is equipped with a transaxle drive system, providing smooth operation and maneuverability. Its 13-gallon solution tank and 15-gallon recovery tank allow for extended cleaning sessions, while the HEPA-filtered vacuum ensures a cleaner environment by capturing fine particles. With a sound level of less than 65 dBa, it operates quietly, making it suitable for noise-sensitive areas. 

One of the standout features of the GeneSys 20 is the SoliChem™ Technology. This on-board chemical dispensing system utilizes solid chemical cartridges, eliminating the need for manual mixing and reducing chemical waste. A single solid can produce approximately 350 gallons of cleaning solution, offering both cost savings and environmental benefits. 

The machine also incorporates the Fortify™ Asset Protection Suite, which includes a wet battery protection system, programmable timer lock-out, and Armor™ telemetry for monitoring machine performance. Additionally, the Airoflex® squeegee system enhances vacuum performance by up to 40%, ensuring floors are left dry and safe after cleaning.

Floor Care in these trying times

COVID-19 has hit the US like a storm we haven’t seen before. Many of us are concerned with cleanliness now more than ever. we have been told “don’t shake hands”….”don’t touch your face”… “Frequently Wash/sanitize your hands”… the list goes on.

If we really want to stop the spread or #flattenthecurve we must take more action than simply taking care of our hands and face. Our floors where we walk everyday, track dirt, grime, bacteria…should not be forgotten. There are many ways we can maintain our floors daily to help keep a clean environment. One of the most effective is to properly use disinfectants diluted at the ratio specified by the EPA to clean these surfaces which we literally walk on every day.

Effective ways to clean:

In a perfect world we would all own an auto-scrubber or carpet extractor. These machines make maintaining floors a piece of cake, and simply put, here is the best way to help stop the spread:

-1st Pass- put down disinfectant and scrub the area with the squeegee in the up position

-WAIT for the required dwell time (check your SDS sheet for the proper claims on the product you are using)

-2nd pass- Simply scrub and recover as normal

The same rules apply if you do not have an auto-scrubber or Carpet machine, simply using a mop and bucket applying the same rules as above will yield the same results.

Maintaining floors does not have to be a hard job, and your colleagues, customers, family, friends, or whoever will greatly appreciate the “steps” you are taking to help the cause!
